Emmitt
Emmitt loves being out in the community, but for his family, outings can come with serious safety concerns. When Emmitt becomes fatigued, he may suddenly run off without awareness of dangers like oncoming traffic, requiring close supervision.
His family did everything they could to keep him safe, relying on a standard wagon for support. But as Emmitt grew, the wagon became too small, and its bulkiness became increasingly impractical for travel.
Emmitt's family knew he needed a safe, comfortable space that would allow them his to safely attend doctor’s appointments and participate in community activities, even on days when Emmitt isn’t feeling his best.
At his doctor’s recommendation, an adaptive stroller with personal modifications was identified as the best solution. Emmitt’s doctor made sure to find an easy to transport, foldable stroller that offers proper support, preventing strain on his body, and designed to grow with him over time. The stroller also comes with a canopy that helps Emmitt cope with the difficulty of transitions by giving him a safe place to regain a feeling of calmness.
Despite being deemed medically necessary, Emmitt’s family was denied financial assistance through insurance and government programs.
That’s where Variety stepped in.
Through a Variety Freedom Grant, Emmitt received his customized adaptive stroller with all the necessary modifications. Today, Emmitt is more active and engaged in his community than ever before. Most importantly, his parents can step outside with confidence knowing their son is safe and comfortable enough to experience the world around him.
"I cannot express enough thanks for Variety and the people that support families like ours. This chair has opened so many doors to Emmitt and our family. His chair has allowed us to go on MANY walks, museums, to Wisconsin Dells, and just strolling around our community." - Emmit's Mom
