Aaron

Meet Aaron, a high school senior eagerly looking forward to graduating this spring.

With the support of his school's speech pathologist, Aaron has been steadily improving his communication skills using the school's AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) device. At school, his device allows him to connect with his peers and teachers, giving him a stronger voice in the classroom.

However, the device had to remain at school each day, limiting Aaron's ability to communicate effectively at home and in the community. With graduation on the horizon, Aaron's family and speech pathologist knew that having his own device would be essential for his continued growth and independence beyond high school.

Thanks to funding from Variety's Freedom Program, Aaron received an iPad with communication software to use wherever he went. When Aaron learned he was getting his own device, he "had the biggest smile on his face," excited that he could finally expand his communication with his parents.

According to his speech therapist, having daily access to his device has already increased his usage at school and strengthened his communication abilities. The device opens new doors for Aaron, allowing him to identify himself, share contact information, and advocate for his needs, ensuring his safety while building his independence in the community.

"Aaron is so happy with his tablet and communication app. He uses it a lot at home. He knows what to click on and shows me where all the words are. He loves to tell me everything he likes, then I like to tease him and say, 'No you don't'.  Once he even used his tablet to say, 'Stop picking on me' and we both just laughed at each other.  We would like to thank you so much for Aaron having this opportunity to improve his communication skills. He's on top of the world with this!" - Stacy, Aaron's mother
