Matthew

Matthew's parents adopted him from China at nine years old. He has a complex medical history including cerebral palsy and uses a wheelchair for mobility. Now a teen, Matthew was recently introduced to adaptive bikes by his physical therapist. His excitement while riding was immediately noted by his mom, "I've never seen him light up like he did on the bike. He said he feels like the other kids when he rides the bike." Knowing how highly motivated Matthew can be, his therapist strongly encouraged that his family get an adaptive bike to help him continue to improve his health outside of physical therapy appointments.

Through our Freedom Program, Variety was able to get Matthew an adaptive bike that was suited to his needs and allowed him to ride a bike for the first time. As Matthew enjoys riding, he will build strength and endurance; skills that will help him become more independent on and off a bike.
