Apply for an Adaptive Bike Today!

Variety wants to get more kids with physical disabilities on the go with adaptive bicycles.

Who can apply: These adaptive bikes are for children and young adults ages 21 and younger who have physical disabilities and are unable to physically operate a standard bicycle or who require a 3-wheeled bike.  The family’s financial situation will also be considered.

What types of bikes are funded?  Funding has been provided for adaptive tricycles, bicycles, hand cycles, and tandem bikes.  Please note that the child must be able to actively participate in pedaling in order to be considered for a bike grant.  Requests for Duet bikes and Buddy bikes will not be considered.

When can I apply?  Applications are available now.  All applications will be due by December 31st.  Any applications received after this date will be reviewed if additional program funds are available.  Please note that the application process requires detailed information which may take time to assemble.  Completion of the application does not guarantee funding.

Bike Application Timeline
Applications due:  December 31, 2012.  Your complete application must be received prior to this date to be considered for a bike in 2013.  Any applications received after this date will be reviewed as program funds become available.

Notification letters mailed: Mid-January, 2013.  This will be notification of an initial decision by Variety’s Board of Directors.  It is subject to an in-person evaluation to be completed at an individual bike fitting.

Bike fittings: January 2013 through March, 2013.  Awardees must schedule and attend a bike fitting at Emery’s Third Coast Cycling where the child will be assessed and measured so the appropriate bike is purchased.

Bike delivery: As soon as the child is fitted for the bike, it will be ordered.  It can take up to three months to receive the bike once it is ordered (because all of the bikes are custom-made).

Bike Day 2013:  Variety will have an event where all bike awardees will be expected to attend during summer 2013.  More information on this event will follow.
